Modem Tips and Tricks Most modem connection problems can be solved by loading the latest software drivers for your modem. These should be available from your modem vendor's web site. However, see the information below to various modem tips and tricks. Also be sure to see some helpful links for additional information on modems.
MODEM TIP # 1 Symptom: You have a Conexant HSF or HCF modem and you are frequently disconnected or cannot connect at all. Problem: Your modem drivers need to be updated. Solution: Click here for a generic driver available from Conexant. You will need to look at your modem properties and more info to determine which model modem you have. Installing the latest update should fix the problem.
MODEM TIP # 2 Symptom: You have a Motorola SM56 Voice modem and are having trouble getting and staying connected or you can get connected but the speeds are very low. Problem: There are issues with our Lucent equipment when using Motorola modems with outdated drivers. Solution: You need to download and install updated modem drivers.
MODEM TIP # 3 Symptom: You have a Gateway Windows XP computer with a GTW V.92 PCI Soft Modem and you are frequently disconnected or cannot connect at all. Problem: Your modem drivers need to be updated. Solution: Click here to visit the Gateway Support web site to find, download, and install the latest modem drivers for your system. MODEM TIP # 4 Symptom: You have a Gateway V.92 modem and you are frequently disconnected or cannot connect at all. Problem: You require an initialization string for your modem. Solution: Go to your modem properties and add an additional initialization string as follows:
MODEM TIP # 5 Symptom: You have a V.92 modem and are frequently disconnected or cannot connect at all. Problem: You require an itialization string for your modem. Solution: Go to your modem properties and add an additional initialization string as follows:
MODEM TIP # 6 Symptom: You have a PCTel modem (also called an HSP modem) and you are frequently disconnected or cannot connect at all. Problem: Your modem drivers need to be updated. Solution: Some manufacturers of PCTel modems are: Behavior Tech Computer, CTX, Dataflex, Evertek, Goldenway, HostModems, Innovative Trek Technology, MicroModem, Multiwave Innovation, PRONETS Technology Corporation, Silicom Multimedia, Zoltrix, amongst others. You will need to open your computer to determine which model modem you have. Click here for a generic driver available from PCTel. Installing the latest modem driver should fix the problem. MODEM TIP # 7 Symptom: A box appears on your Windows computer which asks if you want to stay connected which then counts down to 0 and disconnects you. Problem: You must change a setting in Windows. Solution: Please see this FAQ page for additional information.
MODEM TIP # 8 Symptom: You have a BRAND NEW Dell computer and cannot connect to Tellurian Networks Problem: Your Aztec modem is a piece of garbage. (It is based on the Conexant (Rockwell) HCF chipset.) It is reprehensible that Dell ships otherwise decent machines with such horrible modems. Solution: Contact your Dell salesperson and insist that they give you (at no charge) one of their "other" modems either a Lucent or a 3Com. MODEM TIP # 9 Symptom: You have a Compaq, HP, or other computer with a Conexant (Rockwell) HCF modem and cannot connect reliably and/or cannot stay connected to Tellurian Networks. Problem: Your Conexant (Rockwell) HCF modem's software is buggy and poorly written. You are not alone. (See above.) Solution: It may be possible to make the problem disappear with a software patch. Compaq has released an updated driver which may help - click here.
MODEM TIP # 10 Symptom: You have an LT WinModem (Lucent) and cannot connect to Tellurian Networks Problem: Your modem drivers need to be updated. Solution: You must download the latest drivers for your modem. Follow the directions on this page to find out more about your modem and its software.
MODEM TIP # 11 Symptom: You have an iMac and cannot connect to Tellurian Networks Problem: Your modem drivers need to be updated. Solution: You must download the latest drivers for your iMac modem. Follow the directions to find out more about your modem and its software.
MODEM TIP # 12 Symptom: You have an IBM MWave modem and cannot connect to our new K56Flex telephone numbers Problem: Your modem drivers need to be updated. Solution: If you have an Aptiva or M-Series desktop computer or an IBM ThinkPad laptop, you will need to obtain the latest drivers from IBM. Go to the IBM Personal Computing Support page to find the modem drivers for your specific model.
MODEM TIP # 13 Symptom: You have a Zoom or other generic modem and cannot connect to our K56Flex telephone numbers Problem: You have a 28.8k modem based on the Rockwell RC288DPi chipset. To determine this, enter a terminal program and connect directly to the serial port of the modem (COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4) Type ATI6 and the modem should respond with something like the following: RC288DPi Rev Z20127505BA (You may need to try ATI1 through ATI9 until you actually get the exact modem details. No matter what else happens, you should at least get an OK after every command. Solution: None at this time. If the modem is manufactured by Zoom, the modem can be upgraded to 33.6k which MAY fix the problem. If you are inclined to purchase a 56K modem, consider a Hayes or Zoom. We know that these modems work very well and 46-50k connections are the norm.
