Set-Up Instructions: Spam Filtering

The following instructions are an overview on how to setup your personal spam filtering rules on our spam filtering system. This spam filtering system will work for customers with the following email addresses:

  • username@csionline.com/.net
  • username@cybercomm.net
  • username@garden.net
  • username@lsa.net
  • username@nji.com
  • username@rtonline.net
  • username@shorenetworks.com/.net
  • username@tellurian.com/.net

This spam filtering system will also work for corporate Vmail customers that have signed up with Tellurian Networks for this service.

NOTE: This service will NOT work for any domain that has not been specifically set-up for this service with Tellurian Networks — please click here for more information.

Please visit the Spam Filtering Held Messages page for more information on accessing your held spam messages.

  1. Open your web browser and go to:

    http://webmail.tellurian.com/

  2. Choose the appropriate spam filtering system.

    • Tellurian Networks Spam Filtering System - for those with a @tellurian.com, @tellurian.net, @garden.net, @rtonline.net, @cybercomm.net, @lsa.net, or @nji.com email address
    • Corporate Vmail Spam Filtering System - for those whose company or organization has spam filtering service with Tellurian Networks.

  3. Login into the spam filtering system based on the system that you are logging into.

    • For Tellurian Networks Spam Filtering System
Login with your user name ONLY and not in the form of an email address.

    • For Corporate Vmail Spam Filtering System
Login with your FULL email address.

  4. Once you are logged in, click the "Spam" button.

  5. Under the Spam Settings are two options: Hold and Vanish.

HOLD will hold messages with a point value equal to or above the value you specify. You can check the held messages periodically by logging into Surgemail and clicking "Click Here to view held messages." If you choose to Hold messages, you'll receive an automated email every 3 days reminding you to check the held messages folder. Messages over 14 days old will be deleted automatically.

VANISH will delete email equal to or above the point value you specify. The sender will not be notified.

For each of these, you can set a point value at which you want to take action on an email message. The point ranges should NEVER overlap since only one action can be taken for any given point value. To view the values assigned to spam, view headers in your email client or check the box which says "Add spam indicator headers to the message body." which will add the spam tags in the message body.

Advanced users can create their own settings. The table below provides a range of example settings which should work well for most customers.

    Option Description Hold Vanish
Turn off spam filtering (default) DO NOT filter anything (no mail will be blocked) NEVER NEVER
Low spam filtering 40% of spam will be blocked, but a few legitimate messages will be held. Filter anything that is almost definitely spam and hold for 14 days before automatically deleting. 10+ NEVER
Moderate spam filtering with a hold queue (recommended) 90% of spam will be stopped, but some legitimate messages as well as many spam messages will be held. If email is missing, you can login to the spam filtering system to release/allow held messages or delete spam messages. Messages held after 14 days will automatically be deleted. 5+ 15+
Agressive spam filtering with a hold queue 99% of spam will be stopped, but some legitimate messages might be held. If email is missing, you can login to the spam filtering system to release/allow held messages or delete spam messages. Messages held after 14 days will automatically be deleted. 4+ 10+
Agressive spam filtering with automatic deletion Filter anything that looks a little like spam (99% of spam will be stopped, but some legitimate messages will be lost.) NEVER 4+

  6. Click "Save" to keep your settings then click "Log Out" when you are done.

Additional Options: Setting Up The "Friends" List

When the Friends list (aka: White List) in the spam filtering system is enabled, any email address that is in your Friends list will be able to send you email without being filtered by the above spam filtering settings.

  1. Log into the spam filtering system and click the "Friends" button.
  2. Select the option "Keep track of Friends but don't block anything or request confirmation. (Recommended)"
  3. Click the "Save" button.
  4. Below this, select the option "Add all outgoing email addresses to list.".
IMPORTANT! DO NOT SELECT "ADD ALL INCOMING EMAIL ADDRESSES TO LIST." AS THIS WILL ADD SPAMMER EMAIL ADDRESSES TO YOUR FRIENDS LIST!
  5. Click the "Save" button. Your Friends list is now enabled.
